THE GOLDEN RULE

Do for others what you would like them to do for you. This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12

Do we still teach our children ‘The Golden Rule’? I can remember as a small child being taught, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

It seems like the attitude of today’s society is more like, “Do unto them before they do it unto you” and the doing is all negative. In business, the only thing that matters is the bottom line. The effect of business decisions on the lives of employees is of little regard and of course there is no regard for the competition. In school, it seems the record of the football team is much more important than the scholarship of the athletes. In our communities, where we used to know all our neighbors, we drive by their houses without even knowing their names, let alone being concerned about their needs.

As I think about this, two songs come to mind. ‘Give Me That Old Time Religion’ and ‘Let’s Go Back to the Old Landmark’. Some things which are old fashioned and off the mark in our religious heritages need to be done away with but ‘The Golden Rule’ is not one of them. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Put it into practice in your life today. It might also be good to find a child and teach it to them as well.
