ONCE FOR ALL

Under the old covenant, the priest stands before the altar day after day, offering sacrifices that can never take away sins. But our High Priest offered himself to God as one sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down at the place of highest honor at God’s right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled as a footstool under his feet. For by that one offering he perfected forever all those whom he is making holy.

The reference to “…the old covenant…” speaks to that covenant God established with Moses as Israel was journeying from Egypt to the promised land. Also called ‘The Law’ it established the rules for animal and other sacrifices that were to be made for the wrongdoings of the people. These sacrifices were offered by earthly priests and offered repeatedly. In Galatians 3:24, the apostle Paul says, “…the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ…” It was the guide until a more perfect covenant was established.

When God sacrificed His Son on the Cross it was the divine act of a holy God. It was done through “…our High Priest…”, Jesus himself … the sinless One. It was done once and was “…good for all time…”

Now how exciting is this? “For by that one offering he perfected forever all those whom he is making holy.” Our offering has been made, we have been perfected forever and we have been made holy. We ought never take the Cross and our relationship with Jesus for granted!
