THE CROSS BEARER

Matthew 16:24-26
Holy Bible. New Living Translation copyright © 1996, 2004 by Tyndale Charitable Trust.

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Jesus encourages us to be fully committed to the Christian walk. Following Jesus requires sacrifice. There are things we will have to give up … places we will stop going … words we will stop saying … ways in which we will no longer behave … when we become a disciple.

You may ask, “Is that a price too high to pay?”

I love Jesus’ answer. You see He answers, even before you ask. “Is anything worth more than your soul?”

The next time you feel your cross is too heavy to bear, be reminded of the value of your soul to God. He sent His Son to die on the Cross for your soul.
