FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts. And you will always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 5:15-20

The Apostle Paul was about to launch into some instructions on family relationships which probably were just as difficult for the recipients of his letter to accept in that day as they are for us today. Our culture has changed and yet we struggle with family relationships still.

“…you will submit to one another…”

“…You wives will submit to your husbands…”

“…you husbands must love your wives…”

“…A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one…”

“…each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband…”

“…Children, obey your parents…”

“…Honor your father and mother…”

“…you fathers. Don’t make your children angry by the way you treat them…”

Read Ephesians 5:15–6:4 for the complete text of Paul’s instructions. Follow them with thanksgiving as you “let the Holy Spirit fill and control” your family relationships.
