TREATMENT OF OTHERS

“Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. Stop criticizing others, or it will all come back on you. If you forgive others, you will be forgiven. If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving—large or small—it will be used to measure what is given back to you.”

John 6:37-38

I have most often heard this scripture used in reference to giving in the church. “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over…”(KJV). How does the song go?

You can’t beat God giving, no matter how hard you try.
The more you give, the more He gives to you.
Just keep on giving because it’s really true.
You can’t beat God giving, no matter how hard you try.

Taken out of context, the verse is used to encourage the congregation to give but that is not what Jesus was talking about. He was talking about our not being judgmental of others. Jesus calls us not to be critical but rather to be forgiving. The measure of the mercy and compassion we show is reflective of the mercy and compassion we can expect to receive.

Oh yes … you can’t beat God in showing mercy, but try as hard as you can!
