THE WORLD’S CHRISTMAS

Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world. And this world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever.

1st John 2:15-17

The world has taken the celebration of what happened in the manger and turned it into what happens in the mall.

I must admit that I love Christmas with all its holiday decorations, the winter chill, and the rich smells that come out of the kitchen. I love to see my grandchildren’s keys light up when they get to open their presents. There is not an ounce of scrooge in me.

It would not be hard for me to step across the line and be guilty of what the Apostle John warns us about in today’s scripture. It requires spiritual strength and maturity to enjoy the celebration of Christmas in our material culture and keep its real meaning in focus. Our focus must never leave the birth of the Christ child. We can properly enjoy Christmas only in the light of the star of Bethlehem.

Is your celebration wrapped up in the packages from the mall or in the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes in the manger?
