WATCHING AND WAITING

Then Jesus brought them to an olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go on ahead to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he began to be filled with anguish and deep distress. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and watch with me.”

Matthew 26:36-38

Some things are very difficult to endure. Jesus knew what he was asking Peter, James and John to do was not going to be easy. Their time together that evening in the Upper Room had already been not only long but also very stressful. Now Jesus was asking them to wait and watch while He went away from them to a quiet place to pray. Watching their friend in such agony was difficult. Their own confusion and fatigue only added to the difficulty. I can imagine it was a relief to them to drift away into their dreams. Yet Jesus asks. “Stay here and watch with me.”

Do you encounter situations which are difficult to stay in but you must anyway? Are there things you have to watch which you would rather not see? When you find yourself there think about Jesus’ words. “Stay … and watch…” He will never ask you to do more than you are capable. Jesus will equip you for any situation if you just place your trust and confidence in Him.
